There’s a lot of good family history information available on the Internet. Here are five places we’ve enjoyed visiting this week:
The Photography Channel. This site’s mission is to “celebrate the enduring power of still photography storytelling.” Combining photos with audio into a narrative slideshow, The Photography Channel offers many short, yet powerful, vignettes. The link goes to the one on senior dating but you can click on whatever you want from the list on the page.
Auntie Em, Auntie Em! This is the footnoteMaven’s excellent contribution to the recent Carnival of Genealogy on disasters. In it, she recalls in vivid detail her childhood memories of a devastating tornado that struck near her Missouri hometown in 1957.
Forgotten Bookmarks. From the home page: “I work at a used and rare bookstore, and I buy books from people every day. These are the personal, funny, heartbreaking and weird things I find in those books.” Fascinating stuff.
True Love, Six Kids, One Old House. Kathleen Joaquin Burkhalter – “Mother of six. Happily ever aftering with Bud – is a graceful writer whose blog meanders through her Filipino roots up to her present life in Massachusetts. She’s always a delight to read. This post is about a family reunion.
53 Questions That a Life May Depend On. Chinese immigrant Chung Fook Wing entered the United States in 1923, carrying a notebook containing 50 pages of coarse sheets bound by string. When he was arrested on a drug possession charge by New York City police 17 years later, according to the New York Times, the notebook turned up in a search of his papers at a New Jersey opium den. “Taking up eight of the pages were handwritten answers to 53 questions that a newcomer could have anticipated being asked upon entry or re-entry, leading authorities to suspect they were written to “coach” the book’s owner through the process.”
