I write family histories.
Many people call it genealogy, but I make a distinction. I've explained the difference by pointing out that genealogy is a hobby dedicated to creating a family tree. Family histories, I explain, put some leaves on that tree by telling the stories of the people who populate its branches.
But this week, blogging guru Mike Sansone, a conversation conductor extraordinaire, described it as adding the fruit to a family tree. I like Mike's version better.
After all, the stories of our ancestors nourish us and give us the sustenance of our family legacies. How's your family tree doing? Is it bearing the fruit of your ancestors?
